About the records
Athletics world records are the highest achievements in various sports disciplines. The term world record is only used for the disciplines and age groups determined by World Athletics (until 2019: IAAF).After the IAAF was founded in 1912, keeping world, Olympic and national records was one of its most important tasks from the start. Of the large number of proposed disciplines in which world records were to be kept, records in 48 running, hurdles and relay disciplines, in 17 walking disciplines and in 11 jumping, throwing and pushing disciplines were included in the first world record list in 1914 . A total of 80 world records were held for men. No world records have yet been set for women.
Precise times for the mile run (1.609 km) have been recorded since 1850, when the first accurately measured running tracks were built. The first record holder was Englishman Charles Westhall with a time of 4 min 28 sec in 1855. Sir Roger Bannister was the first man to achieve the mile run under 4 minutes, this event took place at the Iffley Road track at Oxford University on 6 May 1954.
